Wonderful tale of a Down syndrome man who saved two girls from drowning and was hailed as a hero.

Down syndrome patient Valerio Katoya was introduced to swimming by his parents at the age of three in order to increase his strength and stamina.

Valerio learned to swim through perseverance and hard effort, and he also succeeded in the sport, competing in the Olympics.

One day, Valerio and his family were enjoying a beach holiday in Lazio, Italy, when they heard cries for assistance.

Aged 10 and 14, the two young girls were straining against the waves and currents while submerged.

Valerio and his dad plunged into the sea without a second thought to save the kids.

While Valerio was saving the 10-year-old, Valerio’s father seized the 14-year-old girl.

As a skilled swimmer and Olympian, Valerio was aware that the girl should be kept above the water to prevent drowning.

Just before the rescuers came, they hauled the girls to land.

The bravery displayed by Valerio was not overlooked.

 

His gallantry was acknowledged by the Italian Minister of Sports, who gave him a medal in appreciation of his valor and athletic prowess.

His parents were pleased with him, and other persons with disabilities found encouragement in his narrative. A true hero, Valerio Katoya.
