Heather was only trying to buy a cat from a litter at the pet store when she saw something that caught her eye.
But it wasn’t another cat.
An eel was swimming upside down.
The poor thing was obviously struggling.
As soon as she saw the eel’s condition, she went ahead and brought it with her, hoping that the eel would survive.
There are a lot of people who adopt cats and dogs or even gold fishes.
But Heather took home an eel.
She was determined to learn more about eels by researching as much as she could.
Heather knows nothing about eels.
She also only has fresh water tanks at home, so she was looking for a way to take care of the eel.
She uncovered a lot of information.
Such as the level of salinity in the water.
She then immediately started mixing water and salt to match the salinity levels that Lazarus (the eel) needs.
After the tank was filled with the mixture, she put the eel into it.
She didn’t know at the time if the eel would get better.
The only thing she could do at the moment was to change the water parameter to suit the eel’s living environment and hope it will work.
It did.
It took about 48 hours to see the eel’s health progress. It was no longer upside down.
Heather placed a mushroom house inside the tank and “Lazzy” the eel instantly went inside of it, swirled around the house, and examined it.
The eel took a liking to the left-side window.
It’s breathing was a lot better.
But it still wasn’t eating.
She tried feeding the eel with live shrimp since it is supposed to help stimulate the appetite.
Squid was on the menu.
She tried feeding the eel frozen squid on the 4th day, and it finally ate.
After that, it has been smooth sailing for both Heather and Lazarus, the eel.
According to Heather, the eel was so hyped to live and loved to eat.
Its personality was also developing.
She said that both of them have a lot in common, that both are homebodies.
Food time is the most exciting time for Lazarus.
She decided to foster Lazarus instead of adopting him, since she was already “up to her gills” in tanks, and had no more room.
“Lazarus gets the opportunity to live a full life, and that’s what every animal deserves,” said Heather.
She will make sure that the eel goes to a perfect home that knows what to do with eels.
She had no experience with caring for one, but she knew that she needed to help the eel get a second chance.
And she is happy that Lazarus is doing well now.
Heather felt like the eel needed help and responded to it. It is very refreshing to find stories like this.
