Simple and sweet 1927 apple fritter recipe

Tammy loves to cook. That is why she started her YouTube channel Collard Valley Cooks. Now, she has 403K subscribers.

She loves to cook food in traditional ways, and this shows in the methods she is using. You’ll even see a big banner that reads “Like Mama Did” in her kitchen.

And she bakes like Mama did.

Classic recipes like this are treasures.

One bite and you are transported back in time, where you’re sitting in your home waiting for your mom or grandmother to give you food.

It’s nostalgic, delicious, and close to our hearts.

That’s why Tammy was so excited to show a book her family saw in a thrift store.

The title of the book is “Good Meals and How to Prepare Them” by Katharine A. Fisher, Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Even though the book looked old, it is still in good condition.

And the recipes are still golden.

Would you believe it’s over 95-years-old?

Inside, you’ll see classic recipes that anyone would love. There, Tammy saw there were different recipes for fritters.

Knowing that her husband loves apple fritters, Tammy featured the recipe.

The original recipe didn’t have a sugar glaze. In the book, it says that you roll the apple fritters in powdered sugar.

But Tammy decided to use glaze instead, and here’s where we will start.

For the sugar glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 3 tablespoons milk or half and half

For the batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup of milk

Two apples

Tammy personally likes using honey crisps apples, but you can choose which variety of apples you prefer.

Let’s start making these classic apple fritters.

To make:

Step 1. Mix your powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Tammy used half and half, but that’s optional.

You can add more vanilla or milk depending on how you like the consistency. Once you’re done, set it aside.

Remember that when you drizzle it on your apple fritters, some of the glaze will melt.

Step 2. Beat the egg with a pinch of salt. Mix all baking sifted flour, baking powder, milk, and powdered sugar.

Step 3. Wash and peel your apples. Then chop them into small pieces. Mix in the batter.

Step 4. Heat cooking oil and when you’ve achieved the desired temperature, fry your fritters until cooked.

You can mold them or use a spoon to make sure your fritters are of the same size.

Step 5. Place them on a tray to let them cool a bit and drizzle with glaze. That’s it!

Most people would want to add some cinnamon, and you can definitely do that as well.

This classic 1927 apple fritter recipe is something to get a taste of how our moms or grandmothers used to do it.

Once you have a taste of it, you can add whatever you want and create your own version of apple fritters.
