Years ago, a man was prospecting for gold along Alaska’s Kupreanof Island’s Coho Creek. While walking through the woods, he was surprised to see a strange creature near a bog. As he approached, he realized the animal was a large Alaskan timber wolf that had been caught in a trap and was injured and motionless.
The man was taken aback by the sight of such a massive beast, but he quickly realized she was weak and fatigued after being trapped for days without food. While he remained wary of her, he did notice that her teats were full of milk. This could only mean one thing: she had babies who needed her.
Even though he was well aware that approaching the animal to assist it would be dangerous, he felt terrible for her and her pups. So he returned to her previous pawprints and ventured deeper into the forest in search of her younglings. He did, in fact, find a den about half a mile away.
As the guy imitated wolf cries, four little puppies emerged from hiding. Because they were so hungry, they began sucking on the man’s fingers. The man carefully placed them in his suitcase and returned them to their mother, who held them with deep emotional wailing!
Despite the man’s good intentions and lovely gesture, the protective mother refused to let him come close to her. But the man was well aware that if she continued at this rate, she would starve to death. He lovingly brought her the remains of a recently killed deer to satisfy her appetite.
For the next few days, the man camped next to the still-bound mother wolf and her children. He spent his time looking for wolf food and scavenging. He even became friendly with the cubs! When he prepared her dinner one day out of nowhere, the mother began slightly waving her tail!

The man took a chance and approached the wolf in an attempt to free it. She eventually kissed his hands and let go of the venomous trap that had severely injured her paw. Once she was free, she began hobbling home. She came to a halt, pleading with her savior to follow her!
He was introduced to her pack by the mama wolf, who took him to a mountain meadow. It was a life-changing experience for the man as he interacted with so many wolves who treated him as if he were a pack member. The mama sobbed as the man waved goodbye, unaware that they would meet again many years later.
The man returned to Coho Creek four years later for another adventure. As he returned to the now-rusted steel trap by the bog, nostalgia hit him hard. But then he found himself being pursued by a bear, and he had nowhere to flee in that life-threatening situation. As the bear surrounded him, he frantically climbed a tree.
In the heat of the moment, the man let out “wolf screams” of desperation. When an unsettling, familiar apparition appeared before his eyes, just when he thought he’d reached the end of his rope, a shiver ran down his spine!
