Brave dolphins protect mom whale and baby from male humpback whales

Dolphins are renowned for having extraordinary intellect. Observing them interacting and communicating with other dolphins is always fascinating. The way they interact with people is very interesting to observe.

Some individuals might not be aware of this, yet aggressive behavior is a capability that some people have.

Recently, a group of dolphins demonstrated their empathy for other species.

The dolphins defended a mother whale and her young when they were attacked by male whales.
Spirit the whale, a female, was swimming with her young off the shore of Flinders Bay in Western Australia’s southwest. Five powerful males competed for the mother’s attention as a group of them swam toward them.

The mother was still caring for her young calf, therefore she had little interest in mating. Male whales will kill young in order to mate with the mother.

Spirit was aware that she needed to safeguard her child. Despite her best efforts, she was simply outnumbered.

Spirit and her calf appeared to be without hope.

Then, out of nowhere, a school of dolphins swam in their direction.

The mother and child were encircled, preventing the guys from approaching them. Whale Watch WA members witnessed and documented the entire incident.

The dolphins stuck by the worn-out mother. Some of them even frightened the male whales away by showing them their teeth.

The mother whale once approached the Whale Watch boat in an effort to protect her young. One of the men finally seemed to realize he was being too physical.

He swam with the mother and calf as if he were escorting her, scaring the other male whales away.

Members of Whale Watch who were present when the incident occurred describe it as spectacular.

They are thrilled to learn that whales and dolphins get along well with one another. The mother and child’s lives were saved by the dolphins that day.

Human lives have also been known to be saved by dolphins.
Many divers and swimmers have related tales of dolphins saving them from sharks and other underwater predators, or hauling them to the surface when they have run out of oxygen.

Before the sharks lost interest and swam away, the dolphins made circles in the water around the group. After taking his daughter and her two friends swimming, Rob Howes explained,

They began to crowd us together and made tight circles all around us as they pressed the four of us close.

The dolphins hurried him back to the secure area as he tried to swim away, he claimed, adding that he wasn’t sure if they were amusing themselves or not. He then noticed the shark.

“I just recoiled,” he stated. The water was as clear as the nose on my face, and it was only a couple of meters away from me. To keep an eye on us, they had gathered us in.

Why are these dolphins so concerned about other people?

Are they truly performing at the perfect time and location, or are they deliberately defending people and whales?

Whatever the cause, it is undeniable that dolphins are extremely intelligent and distinctive animals. Watching these dolphins assist the mother and newborn is quite remarkable. What amazing creatures.
