150 healthy, happy dogs found living with homeless family in arizona desert

Authorities in the city of Surprise last week discovered a bizarre hoarding situation off of U.S. 60.

Sky Sanctuary Rescue founder and Phoenix resident Elli Smith last week got a call about a dire situation in the Northwest Valley. A family and their 150 dogs, who had been residing in the desert on state land, needed assistance as they were about to be evicted.

“The whole affair was sad,” said Smith. Because it’s beneficial “to both people and animals.”

The pets and their owners had endured the brutal monsoons and sweltering temperatures for almost a year. Surprisingly, when the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and animal rescue officers arrived, the canines appeared to be in good condition.

Director of Sky Sanctuary Rescue Caitlin Beall described the incident as “very frightening.” When we arrived, everyone was eating, conversing, and grinning. Animals are typically very frightened, but the fact that these ones weren’t shows just how much care was given.

55 of the dogs were taken in by Sky Sanctuary Rescue with the intention of getting them well and adopted out. The number of dogs was almost five times what the rescue usually takes in at once.

The sheriff’s office adopted out the remaining animals from the compound in the desert.

That day was difficult, but this is when the actual work begins, Smith said. Now that the animals have been examined by a veterinarian, we must find temporary homes for them all. We must have the resources necessary to care for all of these animals until they are placed in permanent homes. It is crucial to have volunteers who can adopt and care for them.

Many of the dogs in the shelter have medical concerns, but the shelter stated that this shouldn’t stop them from finding stable homes.

The family who owned the dogs would not be charged, according to a sheriff’s representative, and they have already found a new place to live. The current aim is for their pets to do the same.

Authorities gave no information on the family or the circumstances of their plight.

It’s disturbing to witness people who have everything they could possibly want neglect their pets, to use Smith’s words. It was really heartwarming to see homeless people caring for animals such lovingly despite having so little themselves.
