Dog Suffers 2 Strokes & Can No Longer Climb Stairs So Family Take Turns Sleeping With Him Downstairs

Spike is a rescue dog who was given nine years ago to Catherine Morris’ family in Yorkshire. Spike had a different concept from the family’s plan for him to stay below and not be permitted upstairs. He did not want to lose sight of his people. Catherine uttered:

“We shut the stair gate the first time we had him and went to bed. He cried for a while, then in the dark he jumped over the gate, trotted up to my parents’ room, and jumped up on the bed! From that point forward, he slept there.

Spike, who enjoys cuddling, will attempt to squirm under the covers to be as near to his owners as possible when he sleeps in bed with them, according to Catherine. However, Spike is no longer in the best of health because he is fourteen years old and has suffered from two strokes.

After Spike’s second stroke, he was unable to stand by himself for days, so his family had to carry him around the home. He had to relearn how to walk because he was still too frail to climb the stairs by himself. The family re-installed the stair gate out of concern that Spike would injure himself while making his way up and down them. In order to prevent him from trying his old technique of jumping the gate, they started sleeping with him on the couch. Catherine uttered:

“Because of this new arrangement, Spike and my parents spent alternating nights downstairs while I was away at school. We all get a little bit more sleep between the three of us now that I’ve returned home and entered the rotation.

To make sure Spike is cozy and has everything he might need during the night, Catherine’s father goes above and beyond. A real-life example of the proverb “a dog is a man’s best friend.” She stated:

They can’t be separated. They are constantly conversing, and my dad refers to him as “old bean.” In order to ensure that Spike receives his medication and maintains his strength, my dad will also bring Spike’s water and food to the couch and feed him by hand.

Spike’s existence is chronicled by Catherine and her family on their Instagram account, @spikethespringer, where you can see how he is adored and how many people have been following along. On his profile, there are images and videos of him when he was young and vibrant, as well as updates from more recent times when he has slowed down a bit but hasn’t lost his enthusiasm for chew toys. It is obvious that he is unconcerned about his health. He claims that the only thing holding him back are his humans. Spike was described by Catherine as,

We adore our old boy and are so grateful that he is a part of our family. Hopefully, by showing him all the love in the world, we have made up for his rocky start in life.

Please SHARING this with your loved ones.
